John Oliver has an interesting piece about facial recognition, in which he focuses on Clearview.ai. Clearview has indexed 3 billion images, by scraping various social media sites. Twitter, YouTube and Facebook have issued cease and desist orders for Clearview to stop scraping, but the company has responded that it’s their First Amendment right.
While Google and other companies have not moved forward with facial recognition, more than 600 law enforcement agencies are using Clearview.
You’re probably in that database, even if you don’t know it. If a photo of you has been uploaded to the internet, there is a decent chance that Clearview has it, even if someone uploaded it without your consent.
