Senior Director of Search

The Senior Director of Search is the single-threaded-owner for product discovery, including our Search and Browse teams. This role will lead our existing software engineering and product development teams and build our discovery science teams. This role requires experience in highly performant search architectures, query understanding and relevance model development, testing methodologies, and an unwavering focus on customer experience. The Senior Director of Search is a key leader within Chewy that must be equally comfortable working closely with our business teams as well as discussing detailed engineering and machine learning topics. This person will help define company-wide best practices in discovery. The Senior Director of Search role offers a significant opportunity to professionally scale, contribute to the growth of Chewy, and to play meaningful part on our leadership team. It is also a great chance to blend science, engineering, and product with a strong focus on customer experience.

What You’ll Do

    • Create the vision, tools, and KPIs required to create a world-class customer experience
    • Foster a culture of data and science-based experimentation within Search and Browse
    • Actively recruit and attract best-in-class product, engineering, and science talent
    • Create methods for adding non-product content (e.g., articles, videos) to search
    • Customer focused management and measurement of Search and Browse performance
    • Experimentation with models, features, and page layouts to improve our customer experience
    • Team and people development activities – we hire and develop the best
    • Improve site and search performance (reduce latency, improve scalability…)
    • Develop a portfolio of tests that enable continuous innovation but respects the need for long-term investment
    • Be a passionate voice for the power of relevance models, machine learning, and search analytics
    • Setting product strategy, prioritizing features, building consensus, and coordinating feature releases along with internal and external communication
    • Contribute to both short and long-term plans for the Chewy customer experience (not just search)
    • Take part in conferences and external activities while also staying up to date on the latest trends in all aspects of discovery (search, browse, UI, model development…)

What You’ll Need

    • 13+ years of E-Commerce and/or Search experience, an advanced degree, and/or a material tenure at a highly innovative company
    • A history of owning, developing, and communicating long-term visions and goals that deliver customer-focused results
    • A history of high-bar experimentation that results in innovative new directions
    • Building culture of data-driven experimentation, learning, and innovation
    • A track record of building high-impact consumer product with measurable business impacts
