Software Engineer II – Search Team

POSITION PURPOSE

The Home Depot Online Search Team is looking for software developers to become part of one of the organizations most fast paced and dynamic groups. The Search Team works to build upon the current search platform in order to enhance and expand upon our website’s already robust product search capabilities. If you have ever used a search engine and found yourself dreaming about ways to improve its functionality, than this role might be for you. This position will also have you working very closely with large data sets, and even machine learning models to help bring our customers a best in class online search and shopping experience.

As a Software Engineer II, you will be able to operate independently with minimum guidance from others, although you will typically work as part of a team with varying skill levels to create, support, and deploy production applications. This role will review submitted code and provide feedback to improve, based on best practices. Typically reports to the Software Engineer Manager or Sr. Manager.

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
65% Delivery & Execution – Collaborates and pairs with other product team members (UX, engineering, and product management) to create secure, reliable, scalable software solutions; Documents, reviews and ensures that all quality and change control standards are met; Works with Product Team to ensure user stories that are developer-ready, easy to understand, and testable; Writes custom code or scripts to automate infrastructure, monitoring services, and test cases. Writes custom code or scripts to do destructive testing to ensure adequate resiliency in production; Program configuration/modification and setup activities on large projects using HD approved methodology; Configures commercial off the shelf solutions to align with evolving business needs Creates meaningful dashboards, logging, alerting, and responses to ensure that issues are captured and addressed proactively

15% Learning – Participates in learning activities around modern software design and development core practices (communities of practice); Proactively views articles, tutorials, and videos to learn about new technologies and best practices being used within other technology organizations

20% Support & Enablement – Fields questions from other product teams or support teams Monitors tools and participates in conversations to encourage collaboration across product teams; Provides application support for software running in production; Proactively monitors production Service Level Objectives for products; Proactively reviews the Performance and Capacity of all aspects of production: code, infrastructure, data, and message processing

ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Environment:

  • Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.

Travel:

  • No travel required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.
  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Additional Minimum Qualifications:

Education Required:

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor’s degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

Years of Relevant Work Experience: 3 years

Physical Requirements:

  • Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in a modern scripting language (preferably Java)
  • Familiarity with one or more the following languages:
    • Python
    • Golang (Go)
    • Shell scripting
  • Software development lifecycle concepts
  • Basics of cloud native applications
  • Exposure to a CI/CD toolchain (Concourse, Jenkins, Teamcity or other tools)
  • Familiarity with the concepts of resilience, scalability, performance, and cost balance
  • Some cloud provider experience – GCP preferred
  • Experience working in a Test Driven Development (TDD) environment (i.e. Unit tests/ Integration tests)
  • Security tool awareness and Behavior Driven Development knowledge, highly preferred
  • Exposure to REST and effective web service design
  • Conceptional understanding of Machine Learning engineering
  • Big Data analysis and process skills
  • Scaling the tested Models for real time traffic (on Cloud)
  • Search engine knowledge
  • Inverted index engine understanding and experience
  • Experience using Elastic Search and Solr
  • Knowledge of scalable runtime setup of clusters and configurations
  • KNN/ANN search knowledge highly preferred
  • Proficient on REST APIs
  • Knowledge of popular frameworks such as Spring or Micronaut
  • Swagger, Open API knowledge, as well as authentication and authorization experience highly preferred
  • eCommerce or Retail knowledge
